After decades of multiple ad hoc additions to a simple summer cottage, the goal of the renovation was to make the house plan, massing, and finishes more cohesive and dramatic, while still retaining the relaxed character of a North Fork summer cottage. The new owners, Deb McKeand of Worktable NYC and her husband Shannon Goldman, recognized the potential of the house and asked N&R to collaborate on the redesign. N&R literally raised the roof to align ridgelines and create a central large living room with open ceiling and freestanding fireplace. Small peripheral rooms were eliminated or opened up to create spaces more suited to the owners’ informal lifestyle. Sliding barn doors and French doors replaced smaller openings to extend spaces both inside and out. Decks and a gravel patio were added to extend the living spaces outdoors. Damaged and uneven floors were replaced with wide plank reclaimed heart pine, and the renovated spaces featured painted white boards, cedar shingles, exposed brick, and white porcelain tiles.
