This double height apartment with an open sleeping loft had great potential, but it was spatially awkward. In N&R’s design, the mezzanine was rebuilt and enclosed to provide privacy and clearly define the volume of the living room. A new full-height tripartite steel window fills the living room exterior wall and floods the space with natural light. Painted beams and v-groove infill planking give definition and shadow play to the ceiling and vertical surfaces. Beneath the mezzanine, the kitchen was moved forward to connect it to the open living /dining room, creating space for a new bedroom and bathroom behind it. Materials are minimalist and spare. A custom handrail of blackened steel pipe adorns the stair.
