Revitalizing an 1800’s Farmhouse.
When a couple approached us to design an addition to their early 1800’s farmhouse, they sought a space that would honor the historic character of their home while addressing their desire for modern living and aging in place. The result is a single-story master suite addition that balances contemporary design with the pastoral charm of the original farmhouse.
The new addition is a harmonious composition of glass and stone, designed to maximize natural light while providing a seamless connection anchored to the surrounding landscape.
The glass breezeway serves as both a physical and symbolic link between old and new, offering a moment of transition that celebrates the contrast between the traditional farmhouse and the contemporary addition. By using materials such as locally sourced stone and minimally framed glass, the design achieves a timeless quality that bridges the gap between past and present.
Inside, the master suite is a serene retreat, featuring expansive windows that frame views of the surrounding landscape. Thoughtful design choices ensure accessibility and comfort, including wide doorways and a barrier-free layout. The exterior landscaping further enhances the tranquility of the space, culminating in a cedar hot tub nestled in the backyard—a perfect spot for relaxation.
