Designing Black-Out Shutters

A Library Gets a New Life.

There was a very specific request by the client for the louvers on the new French Doors installed at the window: they must completely block out the light. He had seen louvers like this at a friend’s beach house and also in Jamaica. Just make them like that. But it wasn’t as easy as finding a standard detail somewhere.

We started out researching by studying photographs of traditional Jamaican plantation shutters. The detail is very simple and pretty ingenious. To protect from hurricanes and storm, the shutters close and lock by lapping over each other.
